Who we are and why we built a private, browser-based 2FA code generator.
2faauth.work is a free tool that turns a two-factor authentication (2FA) secret key into the current one-time code, right in your browser. It also publishes practical guides about account security.
Why we built it
Authenticator apps are great until the phone that holds them is lost, broken or out of battery. Many people keep a backup of their 2FA keys, but have no quick and trustworthy way to use that backup on a computer. We built 2faauth.work to fill that gap without asking anyone to give up their privacy.
How it works
- Codes are calculated with the open TOTP standard (RFC 6238) by your own browser, using the built-in Web Crypto API.
- Your secret key is never sent to our servers, never stored and never placed in a cookie. Close the page and it is gone.
- The page contacts our server only to compare clocks, so that codes stay valid even if your device clock is off. That request contains no secret information.
